Is Life Passing You By?
I ask you to think about this for just a moment? Have you achieved everything you imagined you would have achieved at this point in your life? Do you have all the toys you wanted, the fancy house, and the vacations? Or do you have this feeling that there has to be more to life than running to the nine to five and driving the kids to hockey.
Do you feel words like “Joy” and “Happiness” aren’t part of your everyday life and you vaguely remember reading about them in the dictionary?
Are you feeling that you could achieve great things, if you just knew what it is you wanted? Feeling a little incomplete, needing the answers to who am I and why am I here? Well… you’re not alone. You and millions of other North Americans are all searching for the same thing. A life purpose, a personal mission a sense of why am I here. Something that can’t be found at Wal-Mart or the bottom of a beer glass.
“Find something you love to do and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” – Harvey Mackay, author
There is an extraordinary amount of profound truth to the above quote. Often we find ourselves in life situations that don’t full support us and our long-term needs. We’ve taken jobs that don’t fulfill us, they are dead end and we don’t actually even enjoy the work. We are in relationships of convenience where love and passion are waning. We even tolerate people treating in disrespectful ways. So I will tell you a profound secret. The concept of this secret is very simple and yet it is so very profound and it can take you the rest of your life to achieve it. The secrets is, brace yourself, are you really ready for this? Maybe you should even sit down. You are on this planet we call earth … To Be Happy (You can interchange the word Happy with Joy with what ever makes you feel more alive). No, I’m not lying. One of the secrets to life really is that simple. Now here’s the but… How you achieve this lifetime of real happiness, this nirvana, is entirely up to you! Which is where we ALL run into difficulties. We have a lifetime of negativity built up in our system, that the task of living with happiness / joy seems all most impossible task to some.
The enlightened masters will tell you, “That you are your common thought”. So one way to start the process of bringing in more happiness into your life is to change your common thought by being more grateful for what you have. When you are truly grateful for the blessing in your life. You can more readily able to deal with life’s bumps as they are handed to you. So if you are wanting to make a change in your life NOW! It is time to start working on what you are grateful for.
Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude – Denis Waitley
Here’s an exercise on gratitude for you if you wish. But before you try it I ask you to treat this exercise as sacred and set aside a couple hours of uninterrupted time to do this. I also ask you not to do this exercise on a busy work night. Rather do this after you had a good nights sleep maybe even go for a walk in nature to contemplate this question. I ask you to do this exercise alone.
The exercise over time is to be work your way through everyone and everything in your life. (Maybe not all your cutlery and garden implements.) But include heirlooms and keepsakes, family treasures.
The Question is, “What are you grateful for in your life?” So ask your self the question and then keeping asking the question until you find the emotions behind your gratitude. If you can’t find any gratitude in a situation, you’re not being honest enough. Keep going
e.g. I am grateful from my house.
I am grateful for the security my house offers me from the elements
I am grateful for the security the house offers my family
I am grateful that my house offers me a safe place to sleep
I am grateful that my house offers me a safe place to keep my family heirlooms
I am grateful for the hardwood floors in my house, so Tina can dance Nia at home.
I am grateful for my meditation corner in my house
I am grateful for the laundry room on the second level of the house
I am grateful for the dishwasher
I am grateful for our dinning area and the meals with friends we have had there with them.
Make sure you work through the possible negative experiences you may have and find gratitude in the situation.
I am grateful for the cat peeing on the carpet, it provided me with the opportunity to learn how to install hardwood flooring.
I am grateful the shelf on the china cabinet fell and broke a large selection of our china collection. It got us to use the good china more often.
